Week 12: Jonathan Rickard

Sometimes you get to accomplish what you set out to do, things fall into place real nice and you get to show off something you are very proud of (probably with victorious trumpet fanfare echoing from somewhere in the distance).

Sometimes it goes the exact opposite. This week sure felt that way, with more frayed ends laying around than things I can be proud of. Progress was made in a few areas, but overall the ecstatic end I thought I would have amounted the sound of a deflating Whoopee Cushion.

With that said, do you think I'm gonna give up? Heck no I won't! A bad sleep schedule, procrastination due to fear of this character design assignment, and little creative motivation near the week's end have been an element to this deep valley of a week, but I know there are mountains on the horizon...or should I say, a swamp!

Here's the few things that I did get done for this last submission.

It goes without saying that I got a few more steps completed with this thing, though there is still a lot of color finessing to do before I begin working on shading it out.

If any of you are familiar with Majora's Mask, I started up a digital painting tutorial I found ages ago based on that game's artwork (so long ago that the brushes do not even exist anymore for it) and here are some of the thumbnails I made. I ultimately decided to go with the upper-right one, opting to focus more on what the Skull Kid would be doing after the events of that game, rather than during it.

While it did not get done this week, I have noticed an area of weakness that I could focus on more. Skull Kid is a relatively easy thing to draw since his face is basically a ball with a beak, but getting the human proportions right (arm length making sense, torso making sense, leg length making sense) is what forced me to redraw this thing multiple times and it still is not done. Understanding human proportion is one thing, but then applying it so it looks good still in perspective and foreshortening? Now that's gonna be a hard road!

Don't think that since this blog is over with that I will stop working on things like this each week. As long as my eyes work the way they should, I will be making things.

I hope everyone had a great semester, and finishes well!
